Retatrutide is an investigational peptide developed by a pharmaceutical company as a multi-receptor agonist for treating obesity and type 2 diabetes. The compound emerged from research into gut-hormone analogues that act on several receptors simultaneously rather than on a single target. Early preclinical work examined how combined activity at three distinct receptors might produce greater metabolic effects than single-receptor compounds. Published phase 2 results have described substantial reductions in body weight among participants, although the compound remains unapproved in most jurisdictions as of the mid-2020s.
Pharmacologically, retatrutide acts as a triple agonist at the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor, and the glucagon receptor. Activation of the first two receptors is associated with improved insulin secretion and reduced appetite. The glucagon receptor component is thought to increase energy expenditure, a mechanism that distinguishes this molecule from dual-agonist compounds. Researchers continue to investigate how the three activities interact and whether the combined profile offers advantages that justify additional clinical testing.
Retatrutide is an investigational synthetic peptide engineered to activate three distinct hormone receptors within a single molecule. It targets the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, and the glucagon receptor simultaneously. This triagonist design distinguishes it from earlier incretin-based compounds that act on one or two of these pathways. Structural modifications relative to native gut hormones extend its residence time in circulation. The molecule remains under clinical evaluation and is not approved for any indication.
Receptor activation produces downstream effects that differ by tissue. GLP-1 receptor signaling influences appetite regulation and insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. GIP receptor activity contributes to metabolic handling of nutrients and may modulate adipose tissue. Glucagon receptor engagement raises energy expenditure and promotes hepatic lipid turnover, though the balance among these actions in humans is still being characterized. Preclinical models showed reductions in body weight and improved glycemic markers.

Retatrutide is an investigational synthetic peptide designed to activate three distinct receptor systems within a single molecule. Its pharmacological profile combines activity at the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, and the glucagon receptor. This arrangement places it within a broader class of agents often described as multi-agonists, which contrast with compounds that engage one or two targets. Research interest centers on whether simultaneous signaling produces effects that single-receptor agonists cannot achieve alone. A single molecular entity also simplifies manufacturing and delivery logistics compared with combining separate agents.
Mechanistic proposals link each receptor to a different physiological role. Activation of the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptors is associated with reduced appetite, slower gastric emptying, and glucose-dependent insulin release. Glucagon receptor signaling, by contrast, is associated with increased energy expenditure and altered lipid handling, though it can also raise blood glucose. The design intent is to balance these contributions so that weight reduction is enhanced without unacceptable glycemic trade-offs. How well that balance holds across individuals is not fully resolved.
Tirzepatide is a gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) analog and a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is used as an antidiabetic medication to treat type 2 diabetes (T2D) and for weight loss. Tirzepatide is administered via subcutaneous injections (under the skin). It is sold in several countries under the brand name Mounjaro for T2D treatment. In the United States, it is sold under the brand name Zepbound for weight loss and for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The most common side effects of tirzepatide include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation, upper abdominal discomfort, and abdominal pain. In 2023, tirzepatide was the 110th-most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 6 million prescriptions.
The Bradford protein assay (also known as the Coomassie protein assay) was developed by Marion M. Bradford in 1976. It is a quick and accurate spectroscopic analytical procedure used to measure the concentration of protein in a solution. The reaction is dependent on the amino acid composition of the measured proteins. The original paper presenting and revealing the Bradford protein assay is one of the most cited academic papers in history, currently ranking 3rd on the all-time citation list with just over 150,000 citations.
=== Environmental effects === Fluoxetine has been detected in aquatic ecosystems, especially in North America. There is a growing body of research addressing the effects of fluoxetine (among other SSRIs) exposure on non-target aquatic species. In 2003, one of the first studies addressed in detail the potential effects of fluoxetine on aquatic wildlife; this research concluded that exposure at environmental concentrations was of little risk to aquatic systems if a hazard quotient approach was applied to risk assessment. However, they also stated the need for further research addressing sub-lethal consequences of fluoxetine, specifically focusing on study species' sensitivity, behavioural responses, and endpoints modulated by the serotonin system. Fluoxetine – similar to several other SSRIs – induces reproductive behavior in some shellfish at concentrations as low as 10-10 M, or 30 parts per trillion. Since 2003, several studies have reported fluoxetine-induced impacts on many behavioural and physiological endpoints, inducing antipredator behaviour, reproduction, and foraging at or below field-detected concentrations. However, a 2014 review on the ecotoxicology of fluoxetine concluded that, at that time, a consensus on the ability of environmentally realistic dosages to affect the behaviour of wildlife could not be reached. At environmentally realistic concentrations, fluoxetine alters insect emergence timing. Richmond et al., 2019 find that at low concentrations it accelerates emergence of Diptera, while at unusually high concentrations it has no discernable effect.

== Early career == Shambhu Nath De was born in Hooghly District, West Bengal, India. His father Mr Dasarathi De was a not so successful businessman. Supported by his uncle Asutosh De, De completed the Matriculation examination with distinction from Garbati High School that helped him to get the District scholarship as well as to pursue further education in Hooghly Mohsin College, which was then affiliated with the prestigious University of Calcutta. His higher education was supported by Kestodhan Seth, who identified De as an extraordinary student. De passed his M.B. examination in 1939 from Calcutta Medical College and completed a Diploma in Tropical Medicine (DTM) in 1942. Soon after graduation he joined Calcutta Medical College as a Demonstrator of Pathology and initiated his research under Professor B. P. Tribedi. In 1947, De joined as a PhD student under Sir Roy Cameron at the Department of Morbid Anatomy, University College Hospital Medical School, London, and obtained his PhD degree in Pathology in 1949. After his return, De worked on pathogenesis of cholera and started publishing his findings. In 1955, De became the Head of Pathology and Bacteriology Division of the Calcutta Medical College, which he continued until his retirement. De published more than 30 research papers and has written an excellent monograph on cholera and its pathogenesis.
The birth rate (9.49‰, 2012) is much lower than the mortality rate (11.84‰, 2012), resulting in a shrinking (−0.26% per year, 2012) and aging population (median age: 41.6 years, 2018), one of the oldest populations in the world, with approximately 16.8% of total population aged 65 years and over. The life expectancy in 2015 was estimated at 74.92 years (71.46 years male, 78.59 years female). The number of Romanians and individuals with ancestors born in Romania living abroad is estimated at 12 million. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, a significant number of Romanians emigrated to other European countries, North America or Australia. For example, in 1990, 96,919 Romanians permanently settled abroad.

The general strategy adopted by most present-day competitive bodybuilders is to make muscle gains for most of the year (known as the "off-season") and, approximately 12–14 weeks from competition, lose a maximum of body fat (referred to as "cutting") while preserving as much muscular mass as possible. The bulking phase entails remaining in a net positive energy balance (calorie surplus). The amount of a surplus in which a person remains is based on the person's goals, as a bigger surplus and longer bulking phase will create more fat tissue. The surplus of calories relative to one's energy balance will ensure that muscles remain in a state of anabolism. The cutting phase entails remaining in a net negative energy balance (calorie deficit). The main goal of cutting is to oxidize fat while preserving as much muscle as possible. The larger the calorie deficit, the faster one will lose weight. However, a large calorie deficit will also create the risk of losing muscle tissue. The bulking and cutting strategy is considered effective because there is a well-established link between muscle hypertrophy and being in a state of positive energy balance. A sustained period of caloric surplus will allow the athlete to gain more fat-free mass than they could otherwise gain under eucaloric conditions. Some gain in fat mass is expected, which athletes seek to oxidize in a cutting period while maintaining as much lean mass as possible. However, it is unclear whether one can maintain enough fat-free mass during cutting for the overall process to be worth it.
These performances can be found on their social media accounts, such as YouTube and Facebook. In addition, they collaborated with Dave Mason for a cover of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright" and Peter Frampton for a cover of Eric Clapton's "Let it Rain". It is designed as a triple agonist acting on the GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors. This combination is intended to influence appetite, insulin secretion, and energy expenditure. Single-receptor and dual-receptor compounds act on a narrower set of targets.
No. It remains investigational, and phase 3 results have not been fully published or reviewed by regulators. Official approval status should be confirmed through regulatory agencies rather than secondary sources.
The added glucagon receptor activity is the main difference in its mechanism. Whether that addition produces meaningful benefits in clinical outcomes is still being studied. Comparisons between compounds rest largely on indirect rather than head-to-head trial data.
It is a synthetic peptide triagonist that engages GIP, GLP-1, and glucagon receptors. Investigational compounds in this class are studied for metabolic conditions rather than for a single organ system.
